100th Birthday Celebration
To celebrate the ownership, 100 years ago, of the “temporary” building by Ruth and Almond Wheeler, the Hollis Historical Society hosted a series of special displays and events, monthly, from June through October in 2014 at the Wheeler House Museum.
Beginning Sunday, June 1st , from 1 to 4pm, we had our fabulous scrimshaw powder horn on display. The powder horn was made in 1757 at Charlestown (Fort) No. 4 by William Blodgett, and is incised with the following: “that we might courageous be and boldly scout the wood and if we meet the enemy, that we might spill their spiteful blood….” The horn was carried by William Blodgett in the Indian Wars, and by Capt. William Read of Hollis in the Revolutionary War. The powder horn was a gift of Lucinda Read. This special display was accompanied by refreshments and the Lucie Beebe Garden, behind the Wheeler House, was open, as was the ice house (what Mrs. Wheeler used to call “The Camp”) beside the garden. [Note: The ice house is in need of much repair and is one of our main fund raising concerns.] We’ll also had hands on opportunities for the children. It was a great afternoon for the whole family!
JUNE 1st…….powder horn, refreshments, hands on experiences for the children, open garden and ice house
JULY…..the Hannah Davis Band Box was added to the display
JULY 20TH….Jim Hayden, Revolutionary War Re-enactor, originally from Hollis, was here in uniform, complete with pack basket, of which he’ll explained the contents. He also showed us how to engrave a powder horn. A great afternoon for all ages! For more on this event, check out our past events page.
